Over 80 of the best melt and pour soap recipes and techniques created by author and designer Deborah Dolen. This is one of the first and the most comprehensive melt and pour soap books on the market. The first draft was written in year 2000 and expanded on since that time.  From start to finish this 61 page book shows you how to work with melt and pour soap bases with many clever ideas including the incorporation of soothing herbs and botanicals or ingredients from around the house! Melt your old face masks and cold creams to go in your new soap!  Deborah Dolen is a big proponent of recycling as long as the material is not "years" old.  Deborah also provides a full natural coloration chart so you can use spices and other handy natural elements to achieve color.  This book sells on the shelves for $19.95 but is offered here in ebook format for $9.95.  Soap sweating?  One of Deborah's readers who sells melt and pour soap at Farmer's Markets, reports dipping dry melt and pour soap products in child safe water based puzzle glue to keep the beauty of her soap intact when taking them to market.  Deborah has tried this and it does have merit.  Melt and pour soap is always glycerin based, and glycerin does attract water from the air - but another reason it is a superb moisturizer for skin. The soap on a rope (shown on the cover of the book above)  is very easy to make, one of the techniques that requires no heat and a great project for kids as well as adults.  It requires simply shredding and moistening a colorful melt and pour soap base (2 bars) and making into a hard packed snowball which also anchors the cord.   A simple bow at the top of the chord conceals the mechanics of where the the cord meets the soap.

Soap Q and A with the Author

Ivory is not soap.  Ivory is fun to carve and that is about it with commercial soaps.  No commercial soaps will melt in your microwave and gross results if you try.  You rarely see the word "soap" on the commercial stuff-mainly they are called "bars" for a reason.  Burt's Bees established in mid 2000's what goes on your skin does end up in your blood stream.  Consider using natural soaps for that reason alone.

I like glycerin soap as well as the old fashioned cold or hot process soaps using lye (castile is what I make the most).  I find melt and pour glycerin soap great for projects and gifts, and overall exceptional to moisturize the skin.  I find hot/cold process best for true natural and gentle cleansing. I use both glycerin bases and castile bases (made with lye) in my home.

Just one fabulous example of the original ideas in our Melt and Pour Soaps Book is the Farmhouse Kitchen Deodorizing Bar on the left.  Between the scent of vanilla and coffee grounds, the smell of onions and/or garlic on your hands do not stand a chance!  These bars are so beautiful it would appear you paid $10 each for them or more.   There are so many recipes you can run with, when making your own melt and pour soap, it is truly amazing.  We are partial to the honey bee soap and calamine soap for kids with itchy skin.
